Geneva sits at the western tip of its lake, in the French-speaking part of Switzerland — close enough to France that it’s easy to forget you’ve crossed a border, until you need to pay for something. A few reference points are worth knowing too: the reformer John Calvin led the city’s church from 1536 until his death in 1564, earning it the nickname “the Protestant Rome”; Henry Dunant founded the Red Cross here in 1863; and the Palais des Nations, built in 1936, still serves as the UN’s European headquarters — history that’s part of why organizations and clients alike still choose Geneva when they need somewhere quiet to talk, more than a reason to visit on its own.

Getting There

Geneva Airport (GVA) is unusually close to the center, about 5–10 minutes by car — one of the shortest airport-to-city transfers of any major European hub, and clients traveling with us are met planeside and driven straight in. That short transfer is a big part of why Geneva works so well bracketing a mountain stay: the French Alps and Chamonix are under an hour’s drive away, so a one- or two-night lakeside stop rarely costs a full day of travel either side of it.

Entry Requirements and Everyday Money

Switzerland isn’t an EU member, but it has been part of the Schengen Area since December 2008, so the same rules apply as elsewhere in the zone: visa-exempt passports (including the US, UK, Canada, Australia and Japan) allow up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period, and it’s worth checking your passport has at least three months’ validity left beyond departure. Switzerland is outside the EU customs union and the eurozone, so it’s worth having Swiss Francs (CHF) rather than assuming euros will be accepted — cards are widely used, but exchange rates at the airport are rarely the best available. Geneva is also one of the more expensive cities in Europe day-to-day, restaurants included, so it’s worth budgeting accordingly rather than pricing it like a typical European stop.

Practical Notes Worth Knowing

Switzerland is consistently one of the safer countries to travel in, and Geneva itself is a genuinely comfortable, low-key city to walk around at most hours — the more realistic thing to plan around is simply its cost level and its quiet pace, which suits some trips and not others. The French Alps and Chamonix are under an hour’s drive away, which is why Geneva so often works as a one- or two-night lakeside stop bracketing a mountain stay rather than a trip on its own.
