Athens works best treated as two or three focused days rather than a rushed checklist — the ancient sites reward an early start, and the city itself has enough going on to fill the hours around them.

Getting In

Athens International Airport (ATH) sits about 30–45 minutes from the center depending on traffic, with a direct metro line (Blue Line) running into Syntagma Square as a reliable alternative when roads are busy. For onward travel to the islands, Piraeus — Athens’ port and one of the busiest in the Mediterranean — handles both ferries and private charter departures, and is a separate trip across the city from the airport, worth building into transfer timing.

Neighborhoods Worth Knowing

Plaka, the old town at the foot of the Acropolis, has the city’s oldest streets and puts most major ancient sites within walking distance. Kolonaki, on the Acropolis’s other flank, is Athens’ upscale district — boutiques, galleries and the restaurant scene that has put the city back on the culinary map in recent years. Between them, the Acropolis Museum, purpose-built to face the ruins it interprets, is worth as much time as the Acropolis itself.

Practical Notes

July and August bring genuinely high heat, often into the high 30s Celsius, along with the year’s biggest crowds at the main sites — an early morning start, ideally at opening, avoids both the sun and the queues. Many archaeological sites and museums close or reduce hours on public holidays, so it’s worth confirming specific opening times before building a day around them. Athens is also, for most visitors, the first stop before island-hopping — two or three nights here before continuing on tends to work better than treating it as a single overnight stop.
