Loire Valley

The stretch of the Loire between Sully-sur-Loire and Chalonnes is a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized as much for how the châteaux, gardens and vineyards sit together in the landscape as for any single building.

Getting There

Tours is the natural hub, roughly an hour from Paris by direct TGV, putting the western châteaux within easy reach; Orléans serves the eastern end of the valley similarly well. Either way, this is a region built for a car or driver rather than public transport — the châteaux are spread across a wide stretch of countryside, not clustered in one town.

The Châteaux Worth Knowing

Chambord is the largest and most architecturally ambitious, built for François I with a double-helix staircase whose design is often credited to Leonardo da Vinci, who spent his final years nearby at Amboise’s Clos Lucé. Chenonceau, built directly across the River Cher, is known as the Château des Dames for the women who shaped its history, and is arguably the most photogenic of the group. Villandry is less about the building than the grounds — its formal Renaissance-style gardens, replanted each year, are considered among the finest in France.

Practical Notes

Many châteaux run shorter hours or close certain wings from November through March, and their gardens look their best April through September — worth checking specific opening times before building a day around one address. Distances between châteaux run 30–60 minutes along country roads, which is why a private driver, rather than a fixed itinerary, tends to work better here than almost anywhere else in France.
