Marbella

Marbella works as a base for a genuinely relaxed stretch of coast, with enough going on nearby — marinas, golf, hill towns — to fill a week without repeating a day.

Getting There

Málaga Airport (AGP), the main gateway to the Costa del Sol, is about 45–50 minutes from Marbella by road, with a growing number of direct routes from major European cities. There’s no train link into Marbella itself, which makes a private transfer or driver the practical way in and out, especially for evening arrivals or day trips further along the coast.

The Coast in Two Parts

The Golden Mile, the stretch of coastline between central Marbella and Puerto Banús, holds the highest concentration of beach clubs, resort hotels and villas, and is the natural base for a beach-first stay. Puerto Banús itself, a marina built in the 1970s, is where the coast’s evening social life concentrates — restaurants, bars and a lineup of yachts that’s part of the scenery. Marbella’s Old Town (Casco Antiguo), centered on the Orange Square, is a different pace entirely — whitewashed streets and a genuine Andalusian town center a short drive from the beach clubs.

Practical Notes

The coast runs warm from May through October, well beyond the July–August social peak — late spring and early autumn keep the same weather with noticeably lighter crowds and easier restaurant bookings. Ronda, roughly an hour’s drive inland, makes an easy day trip and is worth it for El Tajo gorge alone, spanned by the 18th-century Puente Nuevo bridge. July and August are also when Puerto Banús is busiest and hardest to book into on short notice — worth flagging if that scene is part of the appeal.
