London rewards a trip built around a neighborhood or two rather than a checklist of landmarks spread across a city that takes real time to cross.

Getting In

Heathrow (LHR) is the main international gateway, connected to central London by the Heathrow Express (15 minutes to Paddington) or the slower, cheaper Elizabeth line. London City Airport, much smaller and closer to Canary Wharf, is the better choice for short-haul and business travel if your stay centers on the City or Docklands. Gatwick and Stansted serve mostly European and budget routes and sit further out. Central London’s congestion charge and Ultra Low Emission Zone apply on weekdays — worth knowing if a private car is part of the plan.

Neighborhoods Worth Knowing

Mayfair and Knightsbridge hold the highest concentration of luxury retail, private members’ clubs and five-star hotels, and are the natural base for a shopping- or culture-focused stay. The City, London’s historic financial district, and Canary Wharf further east are where most business meetings happen — both are comparatively quiet outside weekday office hours. Auction houses and major galleries cluster around St James’s and Mayfair, making a morning of private viewings easy to combine with lunch and shopping in the same few streets.

Practical Notes

Wimbledon (late June into early July) is the single biggest scheduling factor on this list — hotel rates and availability across the city tighten well before the tournament starts, not just in the immediate area. London’s major museums (the British Museum, Tate Modern, National Gallery among them) have free general admission, though special exhibitions require paid, timed tickets that can sell out. Traffic and journey times swing sharply around major sporting and cultural events, so building in extra time for transfers on those dates is worth doing rather than assuming a normal commute.
