Hôtel Negresco

  Nice's landmark pink-domed palace on the Promenade des Anglais, a National Historic Monument whose glass dome was engineered by Gustave Eiffel.   Hôtel Negresco opened its doors on 8 January 1913, commissioned by Henri Negresco on the Promenade des Anglais facing the Baie des Anges. The glass dome crowning the Salon Royal — one of Europe's most celebrated — was engineered by Gustave Eiffel's studio; the building has held National Historic Monument status since 2003, its dazzling white facade and pink dome unmistakable from the seafront.

  From 1957 until her passing in 2019, Jeanne Augier ran the hotel and, piece by piece, filled it with what she called the "Versailles of the Côte d'Azur" — more than 6,000 items acquired through auction houses and private sales, from Louis XIII furniture to 20th-century design, drawing artists and regulars like Salvador Dalí to her salons. The hotel is preserved today by FDMAN, the foundation that carries her legacy forward.

  In the bar Le Versailles hangs one of only three official portraits of Louis XIV in coronation robes by Hyacinthe Rigaud — the other two are in the Louvre and at Versailles itself. Overhead, the Salon Royal's Baccarat chandelier — 4.6 metres tall, 16,800 crystal elements — was originally one of a pair commissioned by Tsar Nicholas II for the Kremlin; the Russian Revolution meant only one was ever delivered, and Le Negresco holds the piece that never reached Moscow.

• Outside, facing the sea, Niki de Saint Phalle's mosaic sculpture Miles Davis has become one of the hotel's most photographed landmarks; her Nana Jaune stands inside. Rugs designed in 1974 by Yvaral — son of Victor Vasarely, whose own gouaches animate the first-floor corridors — guide guests through the hallways, while a bronze bust of Aline Charigot, Renoir's wife, by Renoir himself, watches over the lobby.

  Le Chantecler holds a Michelin star under chef Virginie Basselot, Meilleure Ouvrière de France, serving Mediterranean haute cuisine in a dining room as considered as the art around it. La Rotonde is the more relaxed alternative, a Nice institution in its own right; N La Plage serves the beach from May to September; Le Versailles pours champagne on the terrace, and Le 1913 keeps the atmosphere of an old English club after dark. N Le Spa completes the property with an art-led approach to treatments.

• Among the hotel's 102 rooms, Superior Rooms overlook the inner facade, Rivoli Rooms face the Palais Masséna gardens, and Deluxe Sea View Rooms look straight out over the Baie des Anges. The 28 suites belong to the Signature Collection, decorated in Louis XV, Empire or French Riviera styles and opening onto the bay, including the Angel Suite, positioned directly beneath the hotel's own dome, and the newly unveiled Suite Jeanne & Paul on the 6th floor, named for the couple who shaped the hotel's modern identity.

  The Imperial Junior Suite (No. 415) was reportedly Jeanne Augier's own favourite room in the hotel — decorated with eagles and griffons around an Empire-style swan's-neck bed and armchairs, the swan being Empress Joséphine's cherished emblem, and named for Madame Augier's fondness for Napoleon among historical figures.

Hôtel Negresco suits travellers who want to stay inside a genuine, still-growing piece of Riviera history — a working museum with a Michelin-starred kitchen attached, not a themed decor package. The interiors are deliberately maximalist, layered with centuries of real acquisitions rather than a single curated palette, so travellers who prefer quiet, contemporary minimalism will find a different Riviera hotel a better fit. For those who want the Promenade des Anglais landmark itself, with the stories to match, this is the address.
