Aman Le Mélézin

  A boutique ski hotel directly on the Bellecôte piste in Courchevel 1850 — the building first opened as Le Savoy in 1955, was acquired by Aman in 1990 and reimagined by Aman's longtime architect Ed Tuttle with a French-fortress aesthetic, reopening as Le Mélézin in 1992. 28 rooms, suites and apartments in total, deliberately closer to a quiet mountain retreat than a palace hotel. • FSC-certified oak panelling, stone walls and abundant natural light run through the whole hotel — Ed Tuttle’s design deliberately steers away from a palace feel, closer to an intimate mountain retreat, with a billiard room off the salon.
• Skiing runs through the BO Luxury Ski Room, built with ski specialist Bernard Orcel — boots stay on heated racks and the ski concierge carries gear straight to the piste; private lessons can be arranged for off-piste or race-discipline skiing. The house signature, "First Tracks", is a guided descent down La Combe de la Saulire before the lifts open to the public, with Mont Blanc and La Grande Casse in view.

  The spa occupies two full floors: a 14-metre indoor pool ringed by stone columns, with two jacuzzis, a Turkish hammam, wooden sauna and cold plunge pool, plus five treatment rooms — two double suites and a dedicated Thai massage suite — using Aman’s own Essential Skin line and 111Skin.

  Akari, the house Japanese restaurant, serves elevated traditional cuisine in a room of terracotta walls and wood cabinetry with forest and mountain views through floor-to-ceiling windows — sashimi, sushi, wagyu and ramen, lunch 12:00–13:30 and dinner 19:00–21:30 daily, plus an afternoon matcha tea ceremony with pastries. The Bar holds Courchevel’s largest sake and Japanese whisky collection; the oak-panelled Salon and Library are fireside lounges; the Terrace serves coffee, lunch, afternoon tea and après-ski drinks, with a Yakiniku tabletop grill running February–April for tableside wagyu; the Fumoir is an intimate cigar lounge.

  For something different, a snowmobile dinner can be arranged at Les Prés de la Croix — a Savoyard cheese fondue en route, then a five-course chef’s menu at the mountain chalet.

• Stays include half board (daily breakfast plus lunch or dinner, at the hotel or a partner restaurant in Courchevel), use of the wellness facilities, a dedicated Kids’ Zone for ages 2–18, and a shuttle around Courchevel 1850 running 7am–1am. Family activities can include stargazing sledging and mezzanine games at mountain chalets; sunrise hot-air balloon flights, helicopter tours and paragliding can also be arranged.

Aman Le Mélézin suits couples or small families who want skiing right at the door without the scale of a palace hotel — it doesn’t chase grandeur, the room count stays deliberately small, and the near 1:1 staff-to-guest ratio makes it feel more like staying with a friend who happens to know skiing, French cuisine and quiet. If ski-in/ski-out convenience matters to you, and you’d rather unwind at an Aman spa and a Japanese restaurant than a grand ballroom, this is a better fit than the traditional palace hotels nearby.
